This is a book of strip maps, mainly 1:25,000 in scale, designed as an alternative to carrying all the conventional maps needed for the Dales Way. The walk is split into 31 sections, each of which provides a comfortable there-and-back day’s walking As well, therefore, as guiding you along the Dales Way, the book offers you two choices: (i) walk some of the sections by the “return” route, often an attractive possibility and (ii) support yourself from your own car in 31 days-out, at the end of which you have effectively walked there and back! The strip maps are annotated with mileage, and points of particular interest are highlighted. A small amount of personal commentary appears on some of the map pages, too. The guide includes sections leading to Ilkley, the generally accepted Dales Way starting point, from both Leeds and Bradford. Each of these sections is fully described. Gemmell and Speakman are interested in the human and the natural history of the countryside, but this book is first and foremost a walkers’ guide.
